The Lombok Earthquake

Thousands of people injured in the magnitude-7 earthquake that struck Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday evening (05/08) have been spending the nights under the open sky over fears that the numerous aftershocks may cause more buildings to collapse. Beside food and clean water, the patients – mainly the elderly, women and children – are also in dire need of tarpaulins and blankets. Some have suffered broken bones and bruises after being struck by falling debris.

A shortage of transportation vehicles from the main ports and airports on the island is also results in an uneven distribution of logistical supplies in North Lombok district, which was hardest hit by the earthquake. Tanjung Public Hospital in North Lombok also has a shortage of medical personnel, who are overwhelmed by the sheer number of patients. Police officers and members of the Indonesian Military are assisting where possible.

At least 105 people have died, 236 were injured and more than 84,000 were left homeless by the disaster, according to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Among the thousands of people affected by the recent series of powerful earthquakes that struck Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara are many children struggling to understand what had happened to them and their families. Some are also dealing with the loss of family members or friends.

To help the children overcome their trauma, members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) are involving them in several activities. For example, soldiers have installed a ball pit inside the evacuation center where the children can play. They are also encouraged to participate in religious activities, which play an important role in the healing process. The youngest victims take part in art therapy sessions during which they draw pictures to give expression to their thoughts and feelings. In the afternoons, soldiers also involve the children in outdoor activities that require teamwork. These activities are all designed to help the children cope with their circumstances.
